As we were heading south towards Mount Gambier South Australia, we found a recreation lake in the rural town of Bordertown, located approx. 15 kilometres west of the Victoria – South Australia border.

Just outside of the small town is a lake, a little beyond the railway line. The campground which overlooks the lake, is a large area that could easily house up to 40 vehicles. Campers and caravaners alike are permitted to stay for up to 72 hours, a $10 per night fee applies. Parking on the banks of the lake is permitted, with beautiful morning views of the sunrise over the water.

Campfires are allowed during the dates stated on the sign at the entrance. There are 2 toilets situated across the quiet road / day use carpark, behind the toilet block is a dump point. South east of the campground is a grassed area with 2 sheltered BBQ’s, picnic tables and bins.

To the opposite end of the lake is a small wooden jetty built by the locals where keen fishers can cast a line out. A walking trail envelopes the lake, with an approximate distance of 1 kilometre.

We only planned to stay for one night along our journey, however, we enjoyed the peaceful and picturesque spot so much, that we stayed for 3.

The campground’s location just beyond the town and railway line makes it accessible while still feeling removed. With space for around 40 vehicles, a modest nightly fee, and a 72-hour stay limit, it suits short stopovers. Allowing parking near the lake adds appeal, particularly for sunrise views.

Heading south toward Mount Gambier, the stop at Bordertown’s recreation lake highlights how small regional towns often invest in shared outdoor spaces. Its location just west of the Victoria–South Australia border makes it a natural pause point for travellers, and mentions like Royal Reels feel incidental to the quiet, local character of the place.
